Christian Wulff – Newly Elected German Federal President

Christian Wulff (a member of the CDU), the Minister President of Lower Saxony, was elected Federal President of Germany on June 30 by the Federal Convention, after Horst Köhler resigned as Federal President in May. His swearing-in is scheduled for today,  Friday, July 2. Wulff said he is looking forward to the task. “I think the German president has to be able to bring people together, to build bridges and promote dialogue, sometimes between differing ethnic backgrounds, religions and languages,” he said in an interview with Deutsche Welle earlier this month. “The president needs a global outlook because many issues, like climate change, world peace and the fight against terror can only be addressed at the international level.”

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany holds office for a term of five years and may be re-elected once. The President is head of state, and is thus for protocol purposes the top-ranking official in Germany. The Federal President is elected by the Federal Convention, a body that comprises 1244 members, half of whom are members of the German Bundestag (national parliament) and the other half of whom are elected by the state parliaments on the basis of proportional representation. Electing the Federal President is the sole task of the Federal Convention.
